What Grows from a Glitch: The Glitch Bloom’s Memory Garden
A single for voice, electric guitar and electronics. ~8 minutes, with a film.
The Glitch Bloom is Eda Er and Danniel Ribeiro, and the name is a fair description of the method. Ribeiro plays electric guitar and electronics, often through transducers and objects, the guitar treated as a surface to be touched as much as an instrument to be played; Er brings voice and electronics. Harsh sounds intermingle with melodic ones; acoustic manipulations are transformed through processing; sound is treated as both physical and transient. The duo’s practice runs from composed work through improvisation to video, and refuses to settle on any of them. Memory Garden, their first single, is the first time it has been put on record.
At a little over eight minutes it is a single in name only. It begins as an improvisation between the two of them and is then left to overgrow: small failures kept and cultivated, a phrase of voice returning as a texture, a guitar gesture repeating until it becomes an environment. The title is exact. Things are planted, some of them take, and what you hear by the end is not the planting but the garden.
The film
The single comes with a film by Eda Er, generated from the music itself. A per-frame spectral analysis of the track drives a slow botanical growth, vines and blooms in amber, rust and oxblood, with a glitch that creeps through the image as the sound thickens. It is the visual half of the same idea: nothing is drawn by hand, everything grows from the audio, and the errors are the flowers.
Ribeiro’s solo record palpability is elsewhere on this shelf, and hearing the two side by side is instructive: the same touch, the same patience with noise, now in conversation with a voice. More is coming from the duo. For now this is eight minutes of what happens when two people let a mistake bloom.
